SKYGARDEN by Marcel Wanders: See it First at Centro

FLO skygarden.jpgSKYGARDEN, Marcel Wanders's much-anticipated new suspension light for Flos, is now in stock and on display at Centro.  Hung low over a dining table, the simple exterior belies the opulence within.  See it while standing, and you see only the smooth, undecorated exterior of the dome, but take a seat, and your gaze is met by an ornate floral relief which recalls the elaborate plaster ceilings of the past.  Sure to find its way into museum collections, Skygarden literally encapsulates the past within the present.  See it now in St. Louis, exclusively at Centro.

Ivan Luini
FPE 1.jpgThe staff at Centro was saddened to learn of the untimely death of our friend Ivan Luini, a significant promoter of Italian design in the US market.  After four years as Vice president of US Sales for B&B Italia, Ivan began his own agency, introducing Cappellini, Flexform, and Ingo Maurer to the American market.  Next, Ivan turned his efforts to two companies with a similar focus, albeit in different product typologies: the technical lighting of LucePlan and the plastics technology of Kartell.  In 2007, Centro made three Kartell donations to the Decorative Arts & Design Collection at The Saint Louis Art Museum, including a pair of Philippe Starck DR. NO chairs, the BOOKWORM wall-mounted shelf by Ron Arad, and in memory of Ivan Luini, the FPE (Fantastic Plastic Elastic) chair, also by Arad.

ARCHITECTS & DESIGNERS
Many of Centro's manufacturers offer CAD (Computer Aided Design) libraries on their websites, allowing design professionals to provide quick, accurate room layouts for their clients.  All that's needed is a CAD program on your computer and Centro's website, which is your one-stop portal to all of our manufacturers.  Companies currently offering this valuable tool include Zanotta, B&B Italia, Maxalto, Cassina, and Fritz Hansen.

Poul Kjaerholm for Fritz Hansen
Those of us interested in design are witnessing an increased interest in the work of Danish architect and furniture designer Poul Kjaerholm (1929-1980).  A current retrospective of his work runs through October 15 at Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.  Publications ranging from the Sunday NY Times Magazine to Dwell to Wallpaper are editorializing the architect's clean, timeless furniture.  Perhaps the ultimate stamp of approval came when Kjaerholm's designs were selected to furnish New York's recently expanded Museum of Modern Art (MoMa).  In St. Louis, Kjaerholm's designs (manufactured in Denmark by Fritz Hansen since 1982) are on display and only available at Centro.

St. Louis Art Museum Donation

knotted.jpgCentro presented the St. Louis Art Museum with the gift of Marcel Wanders' Knotted Chair, made by Droog Design and marketed worldwide by Cappellini.  This donation marks Centro's third contribution to the Decorative Arts & Design Collection.  In 2005, Centro committed to making an annual donation, and added Philippe Starck's W.W. Stool for Vitra to the collection.  Centro's first donation, in 2001, was Alberto Meda's Longframe Chaise Longue, manufacturerd by Alias.
